The Boss Child
Wednesday, February 10th, 2010
You’ll have more room to maneuver if you are working in your corporation because even the CEO’s son or daughter is still bound to follow office policies and abide by the will of the higher powers such as the Board of Directors. Asingle proprietorship, where it’s the boss and only the boss who decides, is another matter; without a proper check-and-balance, the favored few are just a door away from the corridors of power. Again, be professional. Rely on your performance and the wheels of justice to advance your career. Document every accomplishment and project to ensure you get the proper credit. As with all higher-ups, save every e-mail or from of communication that you have. If the Boss’ Kid works in another department, make sure your own superior is kept informed about your dealings with him. Should you have the chance to work with this privileged offspring your self, let professionalism remain your standard. Be polite, Friendly, and helpful with out kissing ass.
The Insecure Boss
Saturday, January 9th, 2010
He always knocks down your work, does not acknowledges the good you’ve done, criticizes you in front of everyone, and has no word of praise to give out and he does it to no one else but you. (If he did it to all your colleagues, he may still be a jerk but he hasn’t singled you out.) The bad news is, the cards are stacked against you from the beginning, because it is your direct boss who has the influence and power to promote you and advance your career.
Try to see if you can still bridge the gap, because the burder is on you. Go the extra mile, lend an extra, bring in that special client, do something that no else can. Act friendly and professional towards him, even during his temper tantrums. Then watch his reaction. If his behavior changes, then you have a chance of getting into his good graces. If he spurns the bridges you are trying to build, then cut cleanly and quickly. Start looking for options and says your goodbyes as peaceably as you can. One last thing: don’t antagonize him or leave him an ” I’ve hated you all this time” letter. As future employers might contact him for background check, you don’t want him to be an enemy.
You Are “Out” When
Saturday, December 5th, 2009
Your boss suddenly turns tiger or acts like Mr. Freeze. If he moved and sounded like he was thawed from the Arctic Sea since you first worked for him, then that’s fine. What should be cause for worry is a sudden change in his treatment of you. Where once he was patient, nowhe snaps at mirror mistakes. Where once he wasalways solicitous of what you and your department are going through, now he acts as if you are blame for every problem. If the boss himself is just going through a rough patch, he will revert to his old friendly self after a few weeks. If he is simply dissapionted with your performance but he still trusts you to turn in good work then he would be professional enough to discuss this in private with you. But if the sting and cold shoulder persists for months, and he brushes aside your own initiatives to talk to him, then it would be wise to start looking for opinions.
The boss bypasses you and goesdirectly to your sudordinates. Now some mentoring superiors have this tendency, but they still keep you in the loop and even tell your people to keep you updated. But if the boss deals directly with your juniors and acts like he trusts them more than he trusts you, this shows a disregard for your position, which should make your alarm belss ring.
The top brass start blaming you for every problem in your department. They just dont brawl at you or call you on the carpet. Once memos start flying and notifying you of your every infraction, them that means they are complining enough documentation to justify thier transfer of you to another department or, worse, your termination. You’re edged out of the decision-making project. Management meeting that you were once part of, decision-making processes that you were once consulted on, memos and e-mails that you were sent to you about really important stuff concerning the company all of a sudden, youre out of the loop. The boss’ secretary ” forgets” to inform you of crucial meetings, yours fellow department head resieves a memo and you dont, and suddenly input is not as valuable as it once was.
